A lion stretching

Stretching is a very natural activity that humans, along with many animals, take part in. Yet, we often tend to neglect this simple practice in the workplace because we are so focused and wrapped up in our work until we get home and pile on more troubles to our bodies which later results in muscle fatigue or back and joint pain.

A few days go by. Now, the pain is starting to spike in certain areas of your body making it uncomfortable to work, or worse, the damage to your body increases the longer you ignore the problem. Sound familiar?

The Occupational Health & Safety website reported the benefits of stretching and that “two recent studies conclude stretching should be part of an overall injury prevention program and indicate “stand alone” stretching initiatives are not as effective.” Meaning, it was better for the entire organization to participate together during stretch breaks than it was for employees to do it on their own.

The studied concluded that the mandatory stretch breaks resulted in a “67 % reduction of lost work day cases from the previous five-year average.” This left both the employer and employees in a happier and profitable role!

Before you start grabbing your co-workers to take part in a stretch break here are some stretching techniques you should know about it so you don’t injure yourself!

  • Stretch slowly!

  • Remember to breathe normally.

  • You should feel a gentle stretch in the muscles, sharp pain is a sign of overstretching.

  • Hold each stretch for at least 15-20 seconds, or until you feel the muscle relax.

  • Repeat each stretch 2- 3 times.

  • Avoid bouncing or jerky movements during stretching – be patient and allow the muscles to gently lengthen while you hold the stretch.

  • Relax your mind and the rest of your body as much as you can – enjoy the sensation.

  • Maintain good posture while stretching – sit up straight, stand tall!
