8 Techniques for Better Stretch Breaks

Stretching is a very natural activity that humans, along with many animals, take part in. Yet, we often tend to neglect this simple practice in the workplace because we are so focused and wrapped up in our work, or even a little embarrassed to stand up and stretch in front of our coworkers.

Then fatigue and strain on the joints starts to build up. A few days go by. Now, maybe some of that strain is turning into discomfort, distracting you from your work and affecting your every-day life.  And next, maybe that damage to your body increases until you can no longer ignore the problem. Sound familiar?

The Occupational Health & Safety website reports the benefits of stretching and that “recent studies conclude stretching should be part of an overall injury prevention program.”  These studies also indicated that stand-alone stretching programs are not as effective as a group program. Meaning, it’s better for the entire organization to participate together during stretch breaks than it is for employees to do it on their own.

The studies concluded that mandatory stretch breaks resulted in a “67 % reduction of lost workday cases from the previous five-year average.” This left both the employer and employees in a happier and profitable role!

Before you start grabbing your co-workers to take part in a stretch break, here are 8 great stretching techniques that you should know to get the most out of stretching and avoid injury!

  1. Stretch slowly!

  2. Remember to breathe normally.

  3. You should feel a gentle stretch in the muscles; sharp pain is a sign of overstretching.

  4. Hold each stretch for about 10-15 seconds.

  5. Repeat each stretch 2-3 times.

  6. Avoid bouncing or jerky movements during stretching – be patient and allow the muscles to gently lengthen while you hold the stretch.

  7. Relax your mind and the rest of your body as much as you can – enjoy the sensation.

  8. Maintain good posture while stretching – sit up straight and stand tall!
